At the interstate exits

When Raton Pass closes, this is where you stop
I-25 over Raton Pass gets closed outright by winter storms, and Raton is the last town before the Colorado line. When it shuts, several hundred northbound drivers arrive in a six-hotel town at once with no notice. That inverts the usual advice: between November and March the risk is not poor planning, it is a road closure you could not have predicted.
Check CDOT’s Raton Pass page and NMRoads before committing to a same-day arrival in winter. If the forecast is bad, book ahead rather than driving on and hoping.
Arriving by train
Raton is a stop on Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, at the 1903 depot, 201 South First Street. One catch: the ticket office is staffed in summer only, roughly late spring to late August. Outside those months it is an unstaffed waiting room with no Wi-Fi and no wheelchair available, so plan your onward transport before you arrive.
The busy season is summer, not winter
Mid-June to August is when Raton actually fills: the NRA Whittington Center runs its Adventure Camp in two two-week sessions from mid-June to mid-July, and Philmont Scout Ranch traffic comes through on the same trains and roads. If you want a quiet stopover, avoid high summer.
