Barnsley Hotels: Where to Stay in South Yorkshire

Barnsley’s hotel stock is small and almost entirely budget chain, which keeps prices low. The catch is that the one hotel actually in the town centre has no car park of its own — a detail that surprises people who booked it precisely because it was central.

Everything else sits out by the M1 junctions or in the villages towards Penistone and Wortley, where you get more character and free parking in exchange for a drive.

Every figure below is published by the property itself, checked August 2026. Distances for the Premier Inns are Premier Inn’s own; the rest are approximate from the published postcodes.

The town-centre parking catch

Premier Inn Barnsley Central is 0.25 miles from the middle of town — a short walk to the Glass Works, the market and Barnsley Interchange. It is by some distance the most convenient base if you are here on foot.

Premier Inn’s own wording is blunt about the car: there is no on-site parking. Off-site chargeable parking is at the council’s Sackville Street car park just across the road, at £5 for 24 hours. That is not expensive, but it is not the hotel’s car park, so plan on walking your bags across and on the barrier arrangements being the council’s rather than the hotel’s.

If you would rather park at the door for nothing, Travelodge Barnsley at Stairfoot has twenty free spaces, and Premier Inn Dearne Valley has free on-site parking. Both cost you a drive back into town.

Somewhere with a bit more to it

Wortley Hall, out towards M1 Junction 36, is the most interesting bed in the area — a country house with 55 en-suite rooms and three self-catering cottages in the grounds, run co-operatively and long known as “the workers’ stately home”. About twenty minutes from Barnsley, and a very different proposition from a lodge by a roundabout.

Cubley Hall at Penistone is the other one worth the drive. Its book-direct rate includes breakfast, which its own site describes as the legendary Cubley Hall chef’s breakfast, and the venue is open from 7am every day of the year. It puts you close to the Trans Pennine Trail and the Peak District edge.

Travelodge Woolley Edge is the odd one out: it is inside a motorway service area. That is a genuine advantage if your trip is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which is under a mile away. Note it charges for parking — £7.50 per 24 hours at a guest discount rate, with a QR scan at check-in — which is unusual for a Travelodge and easy to miss.

Getting around

Barnsley Interchange on Eldon Street North, S70 1SE, combines the bus station and the rail station and is open 04:30 to midnight Monday to Saturday, and from 06:30 on Sundays and bank holidays. The two halves are linked by an accessible footbridge with a lift and escalator.

Barnsley station itself is managed by Northern and has 76 free parking spaces, six of them accessible. Free station parking is worth knowing about if your hotel charges for it. The ticket office runs 06:00 to 19:30 Monday to Saturday and 08:45 to 19:00 on Sundays.

Oakwell, Barnsley FC’s ground, is at S71 1ET, a walk from the Interchange. Book early for home fixtures — with this little hotel stock, a match weekend takes most of it.

What to do while you are here

Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens at Bark House Lane, Cawthorne S75 4AT is a Barnsley Museums site and shows a free entry badge on its own website. In summer the museum opens 11am to 4pm daily, and the park, gardens, car park and the Pear Tree Pantry are open seven days a week.

Do not confuse it with Cannon Hall Farm next door, which is a separate commercial attraction at the same postcode. The farm opens 10am to 6pm with last admission at 5.15pm, tickets start from £5 per person depending on arrival time, and all tickets must be booked in advance online. Turning up at the gate does not work.

Wentworth Castle Gardens at Park Drive, S75 3EN is National Trust — 60 acres of gardens in 500 acres of parkland, open 10:00 to 17:00. Admission without Gift Aid is £6.50 adult, £3.25 child, £16.25 family, free to members, and parking near visitor reception is free.

One hotel that no longer exists

Ardsley House Hotel still appears in old Barnsley accommodation lists and occasionally in new ones. It entered administration in March 2014 and closed that July, and its operating company has been in liquidation ever since. It is not an option. If a listing offers it to you, that listing has not been checked in a decade.

Guides are AI drafted. A small number have been checked against official listings, and those say so on the page.
