A Durham tourism listing puts the hotel about 2.5 miles from Hartlepool and Peterlee. We found only this one source for the distance, so check a map.

Hartlepool Mail describes a Grade II listed building about five centuries old with a priest hole from the Catholic Reformation. The building served wealthy families and later the National Coal Board before the hotel opened in the 1980s. Brothers Alan and David Bradley owned the hotel when the paper reported in 2020.

Sources disagree on the room count. The paper reported 30 rooms in 2020 and a Durham tourism listing counts 15. Ask the hotel for the current number. The Windmill Hotel appears on booking sites near Dalton Piercy, close to the A19. One listing counts 12 rooms and a restaurant and bar. We found a single listing for the hotel and the reviews there were mixed. Treat the Windmill as unconfirmed and call before you plan around the hotel.

Several booking sites also list holiday homes and serviced apartments in Hartlepool, including a townhouse on the marina. These are private rentals, not hotels. Read the host terms, the cancellation rules, and the check-in method before you pay.

Old Listings We Dropped

Earlier versions of this guide listed three places we could not verify. We found no current source for a Hartlepool Backpackers hostel, so we removed the listing. Any hostel you find on a booking site should be confirmed by phone.

The old guide also mentioned the ruins of Hartlepool Castle. Wikipedia states Hartlepool has no castle, though the town was fortified in medieval times. Look for the Headland and St Hilda’s Church instead. We also removed references to a cemetery visit and a theatre we could not confirm.
