Where to stay
Boarders Inn & Suites by Cobblestone Hotels, 45 SE 1st Lane, Lamar, MO 64759. Phone 417-682-6888, or 888-693-8262. Confirmed open on the brand’s own site and listed by the Barton County Chamber.
The Blue Top Inn at 65 SE 1st Lane, formerly a Best Western, is a different matter. It has no working official website, does not appear in the Chamber’s hotel listings, and we found the question of whether it still trades raised publicly. It nonetheless shows as open on booking sites. Ring before you book it.
Where people actually stay
Lamar sits near the US-71 and I-49 corridor. Carthage is about 25 minutes south, Nevada about 30 minutes north, and Joplin about 50 minutes southwest with by far the deepest stock. For anything more than a one-night stop, Joplin is the practical base.
The Truman birthplace, and its Sunday trap
The Harry S Truman Birthplace State Historic Site, 1009 Truman Street, phone 417-682-2279, is the reason most people stop here. Truman is the only US president born in Missouri and this small frame house is the place. Tours are free.
The hours are the catch, because they change with the season:
- April to October: 10am to 4pm Wednesday to Saturday, and noon to 4pm on Sunday. Closed Easter Sunday.
- November to March: 10am to 4pm Wednesday to Saturday, and no Sunday opening at all.
- Closed Monday and Tuesday all year. The grounds are open sunrise to sunset regardless.
So a winter Sunday visitor finds the house shut and only the grounds to walk. Plan a Wednesday to Saturday visit and it is straightforward.
