Where to Stay in Red Cloud, Nebraska: A Hotel Opened in 2025
Posted in :
Red Cloud is a small town with a genuinely good reason to visit and, since 2025, somewhere proper to sleep. The National Willa Cather Center holds the largest collection of nationally designated historic sites dedicated to an American author, and the town now has a restored hotel to match. The catch is scale: the Cather Foundation blocks rooms in Hastings, forty miles away, for its own conference.

Where to stay
- Hotel Garber, 346 North Webster Street, Red Cloud, NE 68970. Phone 402-746-2545. The main event: 26 rooms plus a two-bedroom loft in the restored 1902 Potter-Wright building, opened in April 2025, with Forrester’s restaurant and bar. The city’s own site says 27 rooms; the hotel says 26 plus the loft.
- Cather Second Home Guest House, 541 North Seward Street, NE 68970. Phone 402-746-2653. Run by the Willa Cather Foundation itself.
- Villa Willa, 425 North Webster Street, NE 68970. A historic loft, booked through the Cather Center on 402-746-2653.
- Green Acres Motel & RV Park, 791 US Highway 281, NE 68970. Phone 402-746-2201.
The city’s visitor site lists thirteen lodging options in total including rentals, so there is more here than the town’s size suggests.
The weekend the town cannot absorb
The 71st Willa Cather Spring Conference runs 4 to 6 June 2026. The tell is what the organisers do themselves: the Foundation reserves a block of rooms at the Hampton Inn in Hastings, about forty miles away, held until 4 May.
If even the people running the event plan for overflow out of town, book Red Cloud early for that first weekend in June or plan on Hastings from the start.
One listing that has closed
The Red Cloud B&B at the Kaley House, 909 North Seward Street, is marked “currently closed to public” on the city’s own lodging page, which still lists it. Do not plan around it.
