Shiprock sits on the Navajo Nation in northwestern New Mexico. The town lies on US Highway 491 near the junction with New Mexico Highway 64. Reporters at the Durango Herald reported in 2022 the town of 7,602 people had no hotels despite thousands of tourists each year.

The Navajo Nation Office of the President says the whole Navajo Nation has only about 800 hotel rooms. Shiprock once had more lodging. The Durango Herald reports an arsonist destroyed one Shiprock hotel in 1979.

A 2008 news report described a Best Western under construction in Shiprock with a restaurant, a pool, a gift shop, and a coffee shop. We found no source showing an open Best Western in town today. Do not book a Shiprock hotel from an old listing without a phone call.

Our earlier version of this guide named a Quality Inn and Suites in Shiprock. We could not confirm this property in any source, so we removed the listing. We removed other old entries for the same reason.

Shiprock Pinnacle Hotel: The New Hotel Under Construction

The Navajo Nation broke ground on the Shiprock Pinnacle Hotel on October 3, 2024. The site stands near the Wells Fargo bank off US Highway 491, close to the Highway 64 junction. The Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise will manage the property.

Plans describe a limited-service hotel with Navajo design elements such as local rug patterns and pottery. A separate Pinnacle Restaurant is planned in its own building. The Navajo Times reported a 114-seat restaurant and about 3,962 square feet of meeting space.

Sources disagree on the room count. Reports give 80, 83, 85, and 95 rooms. We cannot say which figure is right.

The groundbreaking announcement set an opening about 18 months out, around April 2026. We could not confirm an opening date or open the booking page. Call the Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise or check the Navajo Nation news pages before you plan a trip around this hotel.

The Navajo Nation expects business travelers to make up 60 to 70 percent of guests and tourists 30 to 40 percent. The project should create 77 jobs.

Where to Stay in Shiprock When the Town Has No Rooms

Most visitors choose Farmington. The American Southwest guide places Farmington 42 miles from Shiprock and calls Farmington the nearest town with lodging. Check a map for current driving times and road conditions.

Farmington has the widest choice in the Four Corners region. Chain hotels line Scott Avenue, Broadway Avenue, and Bloomfield Boulevard. Aztec, Fruitland, and Bloomfield also offer rooms for travelers who prefer a quieter base.

Shiprock is a day trip from any of these towns. Plan your drive, fill your fuel tank in Farmington, and bring water. Services are sparse between towns on the Navajo Nation.

Choose this hotel if you want a standard chain stay with a pool and breakfast.

Holiday Inn Express Farmington

Holiday Inn Express Farmington stands at 2110 Bloomfield Boulevard, Farmington, NM 87401. One listing site gives the phone as 505-325-2545. Confirm the number with the hotel.

The American Southwest guide lists an indoor pool, a whirlpool, a free hot breakfast, and barbecue grills. Our earlier version placed this hotel in Bloomfield. The listings show a Farmington address, so we corrected the location.

Choose this hotel for a pool and a breakfast on a main road toward Shiprock.

Best Western Plus The Four Corners Inn

The property at 4751 Cortez Way, Farmington, NM 87401, appears under two names. One guide calls the hotel Best Western Plus The Four Corners Inn. A second listing calls the hotel The Four Corners Inn and gives the phone as 505-564-8100. The name may have changed, but we could not confirm a rebrand.

The first guide lists a pool, a hot tub, free Wi-Fi, a free hot breakfast, and a fitness center. Check the current brand and the amenities with the front desk before you pay.

Motels in Farmington for Simple Stays

Travelers who want a basic room can look at the motels on Scott Avenue and Broadway Avenue. Listings show Motel 6 at 1600 Bloomfield Boulevard, Rodeway Inn at 1601 East Broadway, and Days Inn by Wyndham at 510 Scott Avenue. A separate listing shows a Travelodge at the same Scott Avenue address, so the brand may have changed.

Aztec is home to Aztec Ruins National Monument, as the earlier version of this guide noted. We did not confirm the monument hours, so check the National Park Service site before you go.

Silver River Adobe Inn

Silver River Adobe Inn is a bed and breakfast. A listing site gives the address as 3151 West Main Street in Farmington and the phone as 505-325-8219. Another travel page places the property in Fruitland, 24 miles from Shiprock.

The travel page lists continental and full breakfast options and access to nearby hiking and biking trails. Confirm the location, breakfast service, and booking rules with the owner.

Camping and Rustic Stays Near Shiprock

Gallo Campground at Chaco Culture National Historical Park lies one mile east of the visitor center near Nageezi. The National Park Service lists 26 individual sites and 2 group sites. Five sites have stayed closed since July 2023 because of rockfall danger.

Each site has a picnic table and a fire grate. The campground has water and flush toilets. Showers, hookups, food, and fuel are not available. Book through recreation.gov or call 877-444-6777. Unreserved sites work on a first-come basis at the visitor center. The park lists the campground as open year-round except on six holiday dates.

We removed two earlier entries, Sky Dancer RV Park and Cabins and the Yurt at Chaco Canyon Retreat. We could not confirm either property in any source. Call before you plan around any private campground, because listings change often.

Things to Do Near Shiprock and Where to Stay Near the Pinnacle

Shiprock Pinnacle rises to 7,178 feet and stands about 1,800 feet above the plains. The Navajo call the peak Tse Bitai, the rock with wings. Visitors can view the peak from US Highway 64, or from US Highway 491 and BIA Route 13.

Climbing has been prohibited since the early 1970s. The Farmington tourism office says hiking is forbidden, overnight camping is not allowed, and a drone needs a permit from the Navajo Department of Transportation. The Northern Navajo Nation Fair runs October 1 to 4, 2026, at the Shiprock Fairgrounds. The fair offers traditional songs and dances, a rodeo, a parade, royalty pageants, and an Indian Market. Farmington rooms fill fast in fair week, so reserve early.
