Cheap Hotels in Sorrento: Which Ones Have a Lift to the Sea

First, a correction you will find on most pages about this town. Sorrento is not on the Amalfi Coast. It sits on the Sorrentine Peninsula facing Vesuvius across the Bay of Naples. The Amalfi Coast is the other side of the same ridge, facing the Gulf of Salerno, and it begins at Positano — about 16 km south, over the mountain.

Second, the thing that actually separates Sorrento hotels: the town has almost no beach. The shoreline is cliff and rock, and swimming happens from paid bathing platforms built out over the water. So the question worth asking of any hotel here is whether it has a private lift down to the sea. Most guides never mention it.

Note that hotel jetties are seasonal even when they exist. The Ambasciatori’s runs 15 May to 15 October; Bellevue Syrene’s private solarium opens 1 May to 30 September, 9am to 5.30pm. Outside those dates the lift goes down to nothing much.

One correction to the usual list: the “Hotel Central Park” that circulates on Sorrento hotel roundups is in Massa Lubrense, a different comune about 7 km west. There is a separate Hotel Central on Corso Italia in Sorrento itself, and the two appear to have been conflated. It has been left off this list rather than described wrongly.

Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria

Five stars, 81 rooms and suites, owned by the same family since 1834, and the only one of these that is both on Piazza Tasso and on the cliff edge. Its private lift runs down to Marina Piccola, which is also the ferry port — convenient for Capri, less so for quiet.

Bellevue Syrene

Also styled Bellevue Syrene 1820. Five stars, around 46 to 51 rooms depending on which listing you read, built over Roman ruins on Piazza della Vittoria about five minutes west of Piazza Tasso. Guests reach the private solarium either by lift or by a path carved into the rock.

Grand Hotel Ambasciatori

Five stars, around 100 rooms, seven storeys built into the cliff on Via Califano roughly 700 m east of Piazza Tasso. The internal lift to its own jetty and sundeck is the clearest example of the feature that matters here.

Grand Hotel Capodimonte

Four-star superior, about 180 to 190 rooms on the Via Capo hillside west of town, with cascading pools. It is not on the town-centre cliff: reckon on about 15 minutes downhill into Sorrento and a stiffer walk back. Sea access is by reservation at a separate beach club rather than a lift of its own.

Where you actually swim

If your hotel has no jetty, the public options are bathing platforms. Marina Piccola, below Piazza Tasso, has Marameo Beach and Peter’s Beach, open roughly April to October. Marina Grande, the old fishing village at the west end, has Bagni Sant’Anna and Bagni Delfino and the closest thing here to an actual beach. Bagni della Regina Giovanna at Punta del Capo is free, rocky and has no facilities at all.

Getting there, and one 2026 change that matters

The Campania Express is suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice. That is the operator’s own statement. It was the air-conditioned, reserved-seat alternative to the ordinary Circumvesuviana, and plenty of advice still tells you to take it. For an autumn or winter 2026 trip, that advice is wrong.

• Circumvesuviana from Naples. Sorrento is the terminus; express services run about 50 minutes. Commuter stock, unreserved, and very crowded in summer.
• Ferry from Napoli Beverello. Alilauro charges €19 adult, €14.80 for children 2 to 12, €3.50 for luggage. Five sailings a day in high season, which the operator defines as 15 June to 15 September.
• Capri is 30 minutes by fast ferry from Marina Piccola — eight nautical miles. Sorrento is the shortest mainland hop to Capri, which is a real advantage over basing yourself on the Amalfi Coast proper.

Is Sorrento a good base? Mostly yes

Pompeii is 30 to 45 minutes on the same train line, at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. Herculaneum is a little further along it. Capri is half an hour by boat.

The Amalfi Coast itself is the weak link. The SITA 5070 bus takes 45 to 60 minutes to Positano and up to two hours to Amalfi, and from May to October there are long waits, particularly coming back from Positano in the afternoon — buses often arrive already full and pass people at intermediate stops. In summer the seasonal ferries are the more reliable way to do that trip.

Season, and a budget option

The town runs on roughly April to October. The crush is mid-June to mid-September and worst in July and August. Outside that, hotel jetties close, some hotels shut altogether, and the ferry timetable thins out.

For budget, the Ulisse Deluxe Hostel is the one genuinely cheap property with a real presence in the town itself, a short walk from the historic centre. Seven Hostel, often listed as a Sorrento option, is in Sant’Agnello.
