- Quality Inn & Suites Vandalia, 1920 North Kennedy Boulevard, IL 62471. Exit 63. Two different phone numbers circulate for this one: the city lists 618-283-4400, Choice Hotels lists 618-431-4109. Use the Choice number to book. Choice also carries a live notice that the pool is closed for the rest of the year.
- Ramada by Wyndham Vandalia, 2707 Veterans Avenue, IL 62471. Phone 618-283-1400. Exit 61. The city’s own lodging page still calls it Ramada Limited, which is a retired name.
- Americas Best Value Inn Vandalia, 1500 North 6th Street, IL 62471. Phone 618-283-2363. Exit 63. Now a Sonesta brand property; some listings still use older independent names for the same address.
Check the state house hours before you go
The Vandalia State House, 315 West Gallatin Street, phone 618-283-1161, is Illinois’s oldest surviving capitol and the only real attraction here.
We found reports that it is currently running reduced weekday-only hours because of a staffing shortage, which would mean it is shut at weekends. We could not confirm that from the Illinois historic sites page itself, which did not display hours when we checked. Given a weekend closure would ruin the reason for stopping, ring 618-283-1161 before you plan around it rather than trusting any published schedule, ours included.
Costumed interpreters in 1830s dress appear in the warmer months, but on the same caution: confirm by phone.
