Charleston Airport to Downtown: The 17 Dollar Minimum and the Bus That Runs One Way Fast
The bus is 2 dollars and 25 minutes in, but 71 minutes back. Taxis are metered at 3 dollars a mile with a published price list. Verified 2026 fares, plus the tide that closes the Crosstown.

The bus from Charleston airport to downtown costs 2 dollars and takes about 25 minutes. The same bus back to the airport takes about 71 minutes, because it goes the long way round. A taxi runs on a regulated meter at 3 dollars a mile with a 17 dollar minimum, and the airport publishes a full price list by destination. This page sets out what every option costs, checked against Charleston International Airport, CARTA and the City of Charleston in September 2026.

Start with the thing the name hides. The airport is in North Charleston, not Charleston. Downtown is 11 to 12 miles away depending on which source you take, and nothing is walkable from the terminal.
The bus, and why the return leg is three times longer
CARTA route 11, Dorchester Road and Airport, serves the terminal directly with no transfer. The stop is a covered shelter outside baggage claim, near the passenger pickup area and the rental car lot.
The fare is 2 dollars one way with free transfers for two hours. A day pass is 7 dollars. Seniors 55 and over pay 1 dollar and riders with a disability 75 cents. Downtown it stops at Mary Street and Meeting Street.
The route is asymmetric, and this is the part to plan around. Coming from the airport it runs fairly directly, about 25 minutes. Going to the airport it routes via Dorchester Road and the Tanger Outlets, scheduled at about 71 minutes. Budget accordingly on your departure day.

Buses come about every 40 minutes on a weekday. An evening arrival has no bus, and on a Sunday that cutoff is early.
One caveat on the source. The timetable PDF carries a printed effective date of July 2023, though it was re-uploaded in March 2026 and CARTA lists no newer version. Two separate readings of it gave inconsistent inbound times, 15 and 25 minutes, so treat the exact figure as approximate. CARTA also publishes no statement about luggage capacity on route 11.
The free trolley, which does not reach the airport
DASH is still free. Three routes cover the peninsula: 210 Orange for the Aquarium and College of Charleston, 211 Green for Meeting and King, the medical complex and The Citadel, and 213 Purple for historic King Street, the Four Corners of Law, Waterfront Park and the City Market.
The 210 and 211 run about every 15 minutes, the 213 about every 45. Free Route 20, the King Street and Meeting Downtown Connector, runs too.
None of them leaves the peninsula. DASH is no help getting in from the airport.
Taxis, which are metered and published
Charleston regulates its airport taxis under a ground transportation ordinance, and unusually it publishes a full destination price list. There is a starter at the ground transportation booth who quotes the rate for your destination before you board, and the rank is at the centre median outside baggage claim.

Two rules worth knowing. The airport states there are no other additional fees on a metered taxi trip. And if the driver fails to activate the meter, no charge applies.
The 7 dollars per extra passenger is the figure that surprises groups. Four people to Charleston Place is 37 plus 14, not 37.

The brochure these come from is dated March 2024 by its file name and carries no effective date inside, so confirm at the booth.
Uber and Lyft
Pickup is not the kerb outside baggage claim. It is a covered shelter across both roadways, to the right of the last pavement, in zones 1, 2 or 3. A third operator, KreweCar, is also permitted.
The fees are the weak point in the published record. A 3.25 dollar drop off fee for rides to the airport was approved effective 1 October 2019. A pickup fee has existed since 2015 but its amount is not published. Neither the airport nor Lyft states a current 2026 figure, so we will not print one.
Typical fares are also unpublished. Both companies price dynamically. The only regulated published price to downtown at this airport is the taxi table above, at 35 to 40 dollars.
Shuttles
A shared Downtown Shuttle is listed at 15 dollars per passenger, departing within fifteen minutes. That figure comes from the same March 2024 brochure, so check it on arrival.
Hotel courtesy shuttles are free but serve North Charleston hotels only. Eleven are listed with direct phone numbers, including the Aloft, the North Charleston Marriott, the DoubleTree and the Hilton Garden Inn.
Private transfer operators quote individually and publish no fare tables. The aggregator sites that appear in search are resellers, not authorities, so we have not reproduced their numbers.
Rental cars, with no shuttle
Counters are inside the terminal, at the end past baggage claim. The cars are a short walk into the parking garage. There is no bus. Returns are on Level 1 of the five tier deck. Eight brands operate on airport.
No facility charge or concession recovery fee is published by the airport or by the rental brands’ own Charleston pages, so we will not state a figure.
Worth knowing for later trips: a 348 million dollar parking garage is under construction that will include a consolidated rental car facility, with the garage expected to open in autumn 2027.
Check the tide, not just the traffic
This is the Charleston specific risk and it is documented by the city itself.
The peninsula’s east to west spine is US 17, the Septima Clark Parkway, known locally as the Crosstown. It is the road that carries airport traffic across the peninsula. The City of Charleston states that it becomes impassable during moderate to heavy rainfall coinciding with high tide, cutting access to two fire stations, three hospitals including the trauma centre, four schools, police headquarters and the National Guard Center.
A major drainage project is under way covering about 20 percent of the peninsula’s drainage, with collection shafts to 150 feet, three 12 foot tunnels and a pump station.
The city’s own flood thresholds are 7.0 feet for minor flooding, 7.5 for moderate and 8.0 for major, against an average high tide of about 5.5 feet. It publishes a live tide tool and a live road closures map. Both are worth a look before an airport run in heavy rain.
On how often this happens, two official sources count differently and are not interchangeable. The National Weather Service coastal flood database, which counts events at the 7.0 foot threshold, records 52 in 2025, 54 in 2024, 75 in 2023 and 89 in 2019, the highest on record. NOAA’s high tide flooding outlook, which uses a different definition, described the 2025 to 2026 year as Charleston’s lowest flood count since 2018.
What we could not confirm
Current rideshare pickup and drop off fee amounts. The only figure on record is from 2019.
Rental car facility and concession fees.
Free flow and rush hour drive times. No official source publishes them, so we are not inventing a pair.
Whether a route 11 timetable newer than July 2023 exists, and the exact inbound run time.
Whether the 15 dollar Downtown Shuttle fare is still current.
Whether CARTA route 31 reaches Folly Beach itself. What is certain is that no CARTA route reaches the airport except route 11, so Mount Pleasant and Folly Beach have no direct airport transit at all.
