Dubai Airport Transfer Cost 2026: Taxi, Metro and the Luggage Rule

A taxi from Dubai International starts at AED 25 on the meter. The metro runs under Terminals 1 and 3 with a zone fare of AED 3 to AED 7.50. That gap is the whole decision, and the luggage rule usually settles it.

Two things almost every Dubai transport guide gets wrong, both traceable to primary sources. The AED 25 airport fare replaces the street starting fare, it is not a surcharge added to it. And the per kilometre rate is not fixed: the RTA adjusts it monthly with fuel prices, which is why no two published figures agree.

What a taxi actually costs

The operator at both airports is Dubai Taxi Company. Its published tariff:

So the airport premium over a street hail is about AED 20. Sites telling you Dubai taxis start at AED 20 are close to a real number but describing it wrongly.

Take the per kilometre figure as a snapshot. The RTA states plainly that it moves with monthly fuel pricing, so AED 2.45 today is not AED 2.45 in three months. Anyone publishing it as a fixed constant has not read the source.

There is no separate airport surcharge on top of the AED 25, and Terminal 2 taxis are not priced differently.

Salik tolls changed, and it affects your airport run

Dubai’s road tolls went variable at the end of January 2025. Most guides still quote a flat AED 4.

Tolls are added to your fare on top of the meter. A late night arrival genuinely pays less than a rush hour one.

The metro runs under Terminals 1 and 3

Red Line stations sit inside Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. You walk to them from the terminal building with no shuttle leg.

Those are Monday to Thursday times. Network hours vary by day, and Sunday is the trap:

The network does not open until 08:00 on Sunday. A flight landing at 05:30 on a Sunday has no metro option, and a good share of long haul arrivals land in exactly that window.

Metro fares and which nol card to buy

Fares are charged by how many zones you cross, not by distance.

The cards themselves:

Silver is the right card for almost every visitor. It costs AED 6 once you subtract the credit loaded on it, and it charges the standard fare.

Gold is not a faster train. It is the front carriage with its own seating at double the fare. Personal is the concession card and needs registration, so it is not a visitor purchase.

One catch on the Red Ticket. The Premium version charges double, at AED 8, 12 and 17 across the three zone bands. Children aged five and under travel free on every card type.

The luggage rule that sends people back to the rank

The RTA publishes two suitcases per passenger, with size limits:

Dubai Airports words the allowance as up to two pieces including hand luggage. Read that carefully: your cabin bag counts toward the two. A couple arriving with two checked cases and two carry ons is over before anyone measures anything.

All luggage must go in the dedicated luggage area rather than on a seat or in the aisle.

One honest caveat. The RTA’s published fines table has no line item for a luggage violation. Guides quoting a specific luggage fine are extrapolating. Enforcement in practice falls under the general conduct fines below.

Fines worth knowing

That second row is the one that catches tourists. It covers the Gold Class carriage and the Women and Children cabin. Boarding the wrong carriage because it looked emptier costs AED 100.

Carrying alcohol on the metro at AED 500 is worth noting on an airport run, given the duty free at arrivals.

The station your guidebook names may not exist

Dubai has renamed a long list of metro stations under sponsorship deals, and travel content has not kept up.

Dubai Marina to Sobha Realty is the one that matters most. Guides still tell readers to get off at Dubai Marina, and that station no longer carries the name on any sign or announcement.

Terminal 2, and Palm Jumeirah

Terminal 2 has no metro station. It sits on the far side of the airfield from Terminals 1 and 3 and handles a large share of regional traffic. If you land there, your options are the taxi rank, a bus, or a ride hailing pickup.

Palm Jumeirah has no metro station either. The route is the Red Line to Dubai Internet City or Al Fardan Exchange, then the Dubai Tram to Palm Jumeirah Tram Station and a walk to Palm Gateway. The tram needs a minimum nol balance of AED 7.50 before it will let you travel.

Al Maktoum is a different journey entirely

DWC is not on the rail network and will not be. The Blue Line opens on 9 September 2029 with 14 stations across 30 km, and it serves DXB, not DWC. Blogs conflating the two are wrong.

Two bus routes serve DWC, both every 30 minutes:

A nol card is essential. Cash is not accepted on Dubai buses.

Watch for stale advice here. Route DWC1 stopped running on 20 December 2022, and F55 stopped serving Ibn Battuta on the same date. Any guide naming DWC1, or sending you to Ibn Battuta on the F55, is four years out of date. N55 is the Ibn Battuta connection now, taking roughly 36 minutes.

Uber, Careem and Bolt

All three operate at DXB, with signage directing you to marked pickup points rather than leaving you hunting in a car park. Careem is the locally dominant app and often has more cars at 03:00 than Uber does.

App pricing moves with demand. At a quiet hour it can undercut the rank. During a bank of simultaneous arrivals it will not.

Taxi types at the rank

Family taxis and taxis for people of determination are available at Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and at DWC, and the RTA confirms pricing does not differ from the standard service. Holders of a Sanad card get 50 percent off.

Limousines are the genuine exception, on a materially higher tariff. We could not find an RTA or DTC page publishing the limousine rates, so we are not quoting them.

• Typical taxi fares to Downtown, Dubai Marina, Deira, Palm Jumeirah or Business Bay. Neither the RTA, Dubai Taxi nor Dubai Airports publishes them. Every figure in circulation comes from commercial calculators with no stated method, so we are not repeating them. You can estimate your own from AED 25 plus AED 2.45 a kilometre plus tolls.
• Any dedicated fine for a luggage violation. The RTA publishes the limits but no matching penalty.
• Exact nol fares on the F55 and N55. Neither the RTA nor Dubai Airports publishes a route specific fare.
• Limousine tariffs from an official source.
• Whether ride hailing apps pay an airport pickup fee that is passed to the passenger.
• Palm Monorail ticket prices, hours and whether it accepts nol.

Dubai Taxi publishes AED 25 on one page and AED 20 for a standard vehicle with AED 25 for a van on another. We have gone with AED 25, which is what Dubai Airports and the main Dubai Taxi tariff page both say, and flag that vans may differ.
