Huntsville Alabama Airport Transfers: What Actually Runs

Start with the fact that saves the most time: no city bus serves Huntsville International Airport. Huntsville Transit runs ten Orbit routes and not one of them goes near HSV. If a search result tells you to take a bus, it has confused Airport Road in southeast Huntsville with the airport, which is about ten miles away on the other side of town.

That leaves four realistic ways out, and HSV is small enough that all of them start within a minute of the carousel.

Rental cars

Counters are on the first level by baggage claim, in the terminal. Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Alamo are the brands listed on the airport site. Direct numbers, from the airport ground transportation page: Avis (256) 258-1034, Budget (256) 258-1038, Enterprise (256) 542-2002, Hertz (256) 772-9331, National and Alamo (256) 542-2000.

The airport does not say whether returns are adjacent to the terminal or shuttle-served, so allow a few extra minutes on the way back until you have done it once.

Taxis

The airport names three taxi partners: Huntsville Cab, Trans City Cab and A-24/7 Taxi. An older page still live on the airport domain instead lists Express Taxi (256) 947-7922, Huntsville Cab (256) 539-9444 and Trans City Cab (256) 536-1113. Only Huntsville Cab and Trans City Cab appear on both, so those two are the safe calls.

No taxi fares are published, and the airport does not state where the rank stands. Phone ahead if the price matters.

Uber and Lyft

The airport confirms both operate but names no pickup zone. Uber tells riders to head for the passenger pickup area on Glenn Hearn Boulevard SW, by the Four Points by Sheraton. That sounds like an off-site hotel and is not: the Four Points sits above the ticketing hall, inside the terminal building. In practice you are walking out of arrivals to the main kerb.

Hotel shuttles, and which hotels actually run one

This is the one area where HSV publishes something genuinely useful. Six operators are listed as running a shuttle:

  • Embassy Suites by Hilton, Huntsville: (256) 539-7373
  • La Quinta Inn & Suites, Madison: (256) 258-2777
  • Best Western, Madison: (256) 772-7170
  • The Westin, Huntsville: (256) 428-2000
  • Courtyard by Marriott, Huntsville: (256) 837-1400
  • US Space & Rocket Center and Space Camp shuttle: 1-800-637-7223

There is no courtesy phone board and no marked shuttle island. Call the hotel when you land and ask where to wait.

Parking, and the free options

The first 30 minutes in any HSV lot are free, which is unusual and worth knowing if you are collecting someone.

OptionRate
Deck level 1, short stay$2 an hour, up to $25 a day
Deck levels 2 to 6$2 an hour, up to $13 a day
Economy lot$2 an hour, up to $9 a day
Cell phone lotFree, under a minute from baggage claim
Covered waiting spaces in front of the terminalFree, 10 minute limit

The deck has five covered levels and a walkway straight into the terminal, so you are not crossing open ground with bags. Rates were listed as above when we checked; the airport does not print an effective date on the page.

How far out is it

HSV lies roughly ten miles southwest of downtown Huntsville. Neither the airport, the Port of Huntsville nor the city publishes a drive time, and we are not going to invent one, but there is no meaningful traffic between the terminal and I-565.

So which one

  • Staying at one of the six hotels above: use their shuttle. It is the only free ride in this list.
  • Working at Redstone or Cummings Research Park: rent. Nothing else reaches those sites reliably.
  • One night downtown: rideshare or a cab. A rental will sit unused.
  • Counting on public transport: do not. There is none.

The same trade-offs apply at every airport. See how to choose between a taxi, a train, a shuttle and a private car.
