Fiumicino and Ciampino to Rome: The Fixed Taxi Fare and Every Other Option
A taxi from Fiumicino to central Rome is a fixed 55 euros, all supplements included. Ciampino is 40. The train is 14. Verified 2026 fares, times and the stale figures to ignore.

A taxi from Fiumicino to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls costs 55 euros. That is a legally fixed price, per car, with every supplement already in it. From Ciampino it is 40 euros. The train from Fiumicino to Termini costs 14 euros and takes 32 minutes. This page sets out what every option costs, checked against Trenitalia, Aeroporti di Roma and Roma Servizi per la Mobilita in September 2026.

The fixed taxi fare, and the two traps around it
Rome sets a single price from each airport to the historic centre. Roma Servizi per la Mobilita, the city’s own mobility agency, updated its page on 14 July 2026 and gives 55 euros from Fiumicino and 40 euros from Ciampino. Aeroporti di Roma publishes the same figures.
The fare is all inclusive. It covers luggage, night hours, holidays and every other supplement, and it is charged per car rather than per passenger. A standard Rome taxi takes four people.
Other fixed fares from Fiumicino are 60 euros to Tiburtina, 50 to Ostiense, 55 to Ciampino airport, 26 to Fiera di Roma and 130 to the port at Civitavecchia. Anywhere else inside the ring road is capped at 80 euros. From Ciampino it is 40 euros to Ostiense or Tiburtina, 55 to Fiumicino, and a 25 euro minimum elsewhere.
The first trap is the driver who tells you the fixed fare does not apply, because of your bags, the hour, the number of people or the holiday. All of that is already inside the fare. Say the fixed price out loud before the boot opens.
The second trap is a stale official page. Turismo Roma, run by the city itself, still publishes 48 euros from Fiumicino and 30 from Ciampino. Those are old figures. If you quote them at the rank you will be arguing from a source the driver knows is out of date.
One thing we could not settle. Roma Servizi per la Mobilita lists a 5 euro charge per passenger from the fifth onward in a larger vehicle, and 1 euro per oversized bag. It also calls the airport fares all inclusive. Whether those charges can be added on top of a fixed fare for a group of five or more is ambiguous in the source. For up to four people with luggage, 55 euros is the total.
Trains from Fiumicino
Two trains leave the airport and they go to different places.
The Leonardo Express runs non stop to Termini in 32 minutes for 14 euros. It uses dedicated platforms 23 and 24, which are at the far end of the station on the Via Giolitti side. There are up to 138 trains a day, every 15 minutes at peak and every 30 off peak. A carnet of ten costs 115 euros and a group ticket for four costs 40.
The FL1 costs 8 euros and does not go to Termini. It runs through Rome on the belt line, calling at Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana and Tiburtina, and reaches Tiburtina in 48 minutes. It runs every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 at weekends, roughly 05:57 to 22:42.
Which one you want depends on your hotel, not on the price. From Ostiense you change to Metro B at Piramide. From Tiburtina you change to Metro B. From Trastevere take tram 8. If you are staying near Termini, pay the extra 6 euros.
Termini is a dead end station, so a through service from Orte to Fiumicino cannot call there without reversing. That is why the FL1 uses Tiburtina as its hub. We could not find an official source stating that reason in those words, so treat the explanation as ours and the routing as the fact.
The last train is the one figure you should check yourself. Trenitalia’s own timetable for the period to 12 December 2026 gives a last departure of 23:37 from the airport. Aeroporti di Roma says 23:27. Turismo Roma says 23:23. Three official or semi official sources, three answers.
Airport buses from Fiumicino
Three operators run coaches into the city, and their published prices differ sharply from what third party guides quote.
- Terravision charges 4 euros one way and 8 return to Termini, or 6 and 12 to the Vatican at Via Crescenzio. It runs every 20 minutes and takes 45 to 50 minutes. Pickup is platform 18. Children under 4 travel free.
- Rome Airport Bus, run by Schiaffini, charges 8 euros online or 9 at the desk, one way to Termini. Return is 12 online or 15 walk up. There are 29 departures a day from the airport between 06:00 and 23:55, and 30 back from 04:30 to 01:00. It takes about 50 minutes, leaves from Terminal 3 arrivals and stops on Via Giovanni Giolitti.
- SIT Bus Shuttle publishes 13 euros with a 2 euro surcharge if you buy at the stop. Its page does not say whether that is one way or return, so we cannot tell you. It leaves from Terminal 3, bay 16, and stops at Termini on Via Marsala, at the Vatican and on Circonvallazione Aurelia.
Ciampino
There is no railway station at the terminal. Everyone leaving Ciampino takes a bus, at least for the first leg.
The cheapest way in is the Ciampino Airlink, a combined ticket sold by Trenitalia at 2.70 euros a person. It covers the ATRAL shuttle from the square in front of the terminal to Ciampino railway station, a ride of about ten minutes, and the train onward to Termini. Turismo Roma puts that train leg at 10 minutes. The official page does not publish an end to end total, so budget around half an hour and check the train frequency before you rely on it.
Other options from Ciampino. ATRAL runs to Anagnina at the southern end of Metro A, about 15 minutes, every 40 minutes or so, from 06:30 to 22:30. ATAC line 720 runs to Laurentina on Metro B on a 1.50 euro city ticket. Terravision goes to Termini from 6 euros one way in about 40 to 45 minutes, and Rome Airport Bus charges 8 euros online for the same trip.
All the bus stops sit opposite International Departures.
Uber and the apps
Uber in Rome is not what it is in most cities, and this catches people out.
UberPop, the peer to peer product, was banned in Italy in 2015 by the courts in Milan and then nationwide from Turin. There is no UberX in Rome. What Uber actually dispatches is either an NCC, a licensed chauffeur hire car sold as Black, Comfort or Van, or Uber Taxi, which sends an ordinary licensed white taxi.
The consequence is money. The fixed 55 euro fare binds taxis. It does not bind chauffeur hire cars. Uber states the position on its own Fiumicino page, which is that you will not find a flat rate from the airport to the centre with Uber.
Uber publishes these averages from Fiumicino for the past month. Taxi 57 euros, Comfort 67, Taxi Van 72, Black 96, Van 110. Every one of those is at or above the regulated taxi fare.
Free Now operates in Rome and dispatches licensed taxis only. Because they are taxis, the fixed airport fare should apply in principle, but Free Now publishes no fares and no airport policy, so we cannot confirm it.
The touts in arrivals
Aeroporti di Roma puts its own warning on both airports’ taxi pages. Any other vehicle waiting at the airport exit may be driven by someone without a licence, and the fare demanded may be higher. The English page adds that you should be suspicious of anyone inside the airport offering transport.
Licensed Rome taxis do not tout. They queue at the rank, which at Fiumicino is at arrivals level in front of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 and near the railway station, and at Ciampino opposite International Departures. The cars are white, with a TAXI sign on the roof and a licence number on the doors, the rear and inside.
Private transfers
A sedan from Fiumicino runs from about 60 euros and a minivan for up to eight from about 81. From Ciampino a car is around 55. Those come from one operator’s published rates rather than a survey of the market.
The comparison is simple. For up to four people a private sedan costs more than the fixed taxi fare and buys you a name board and a booking. For more than four, a taxi cannot carry you, so the minivan is the real option.
What we could not confirm
The last Leonardo Express. Three sources give three times.
Whether the extra passenger and oversized bag charges can be added to a fixed airport fare.
