Madrid Barajas to the City: The 3 Euro Supplement Nobody Mentions
The airport metro really costs 4.50 to 5 euros, or 7.50 on your first trip. The taxi is a fixed 33 with no supplements at all. Verified 2026 fares, passes and pickup points.

The Madrid metro advertises a 1.50 euro fare. From the airport it costs 4.50 to 5.00, and on your first trip 7.00 to 7.50 once you buy the card it has to sit on. The airport supplement is 3 euros and it is not in the price you see. Meanwhile a taxi to anywhere inside the M-30 is a fixed 33 euros with no supplements of any kind. This page sets out what every option costs, checked against Aena, CRTM and the Ayuntamiento de Madrid in September 2026.
What each option costs
| Option | Real cost | Time | Where it takes you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro line 8 | 4.50 to 5.00 euros, plus 2.50 for the card | 15 to 20 minutes plus changes | Nuevos Ministerios, then change |
| Cercanias C-1 from T4 | About 2.60 euros | 12 to 15 minutes | Chamartin only |
| Express bus 203 | 5.00 euros | About 40 minutes to Atocha | Cibeles, O’Donnell, Atocha |
| Taxi | 33.00 euros fixed | 20 to 30 minutes | Anywhere inside the M-30 |
The airport is about 12 km north east of the centre. No airport rail service reaches Sol, Gran Via or Atocha directly.
The supplement, and the card
The metro single in Zone A is 1.50 to 2.00 euros on a sliding scale by number of stations. Entering or leaving at an airport station adds a 3 euro supplement. So the real single is 4.50 to 5.00.
Then there is the card. Madrid has no paper metro tickets. Singles and ten journey tickets have to be loaded onto a Tarjeta Transporte Publico Multi, which costs 2.50 euros and is not refundable. So a first trip from the airport is 7.00 to 7.50 all in.
The card is anonymous and can be shared by several people, provided they are all making the same journey.
What escapes the supplement: the tourist pass, any Abono Transporte covering Zone A, Cercanias tickets and interurban bus tickets. What does not: the single and the ten journey Metrobus.
One thing to watch. On 10 September 2026 the Comunidad de Madrid announced a flat 1.50 euro single Metro fare for Zone A from October 2026, replacing the sliding scale. No start date was given and the announcement said nothing about the airport supplement. If you are reading this after October, check.
The tourist pass, which does include the supplement
The Abono Turistico covers the 3 euro supplement. CRTM says so in as many words. It also comes with the Multi card free when it is your first load.
| Days | Zona A |
|---|---|
| 1 | 10.30 euros |
| 2 | 17.50 euros |
| 3 | 23.10 euros |
| 5 | 33.40 euros |
| 7 | 43.20 euros |
Under 11s pay half. The arithmetic is simple. A one day pass at 10.30 against an airport single at 4.50 to 5.00 means the pass pays for itself on the airport trip plus about three city journeys.
Two traps. The days are consecutive calendar days, not 24 hour periods, so a pass bought at 10pm loses that day. And Zona A does not cover the Expres Aeropuerto bus, despite covering everything else.
The metro, and where it does not go
Line 8 terminates at Nuevos Ministerios, about 3 km north of Gran Via. Every journey into the centre changes there.
For Sol and Gran Via it is line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios, line 10 to Tribunal, then line 1. Two changes.
The metro runs 06:05 to 02:00 daily including holidays, with the last train leaving each terminus at 01:33.
There are only two metro stations at this airport. Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 is physically inside Terminal 2 on floor 1, and Aeropuerto T4 is on floor minus one. There is no station in Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. Arrivals there walk to Terminal 2.
We could not verify the journey time to Nuevos Ministerios against an official source. Metro de Madrid’s site blocks automated access and Aena publishes no figure. A secondary source gives 15 to 20 minutes. Treat it as approximate.
The train from T4
Cercanias serves Terminal 4 only, and the line is shorter than most guides suggest.
The C-1 runs Chamartin to Aeropuerto T4 with four stations in total: Chamartin, Fuente de la Mora, Valdebebas and the airport. It does not go to Atocha. English language sources describing a Principe Pio to T4 route are out of date. For Atocha you change at Chamartin, or take the 203.
The journey to Chamartin takes about 12 to 15 minutes and trains come every 15 to 30 minutes depending on the source. The airport carries a special Cercanias fare, quoted at 2.60 euros by secondary sources. Renfe’s and CRTM’s own fare tables were not machine readable for us, so treat that figure as unconfirmed.
One thing worth knowing. If you hold a long distance AVE ticket with a Combinado Cercanias code, the Cercanias leg is free.
The express bus
Line 203, the Expres Aeropuerto, costs 5 euros bought on board. No travel pass and no Multi card is valid on it. You pay with cash up to a 20 euro note, a contactless card or phone, or at the platform totems.
It runs 24 hours, 365 days, with reduced service on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.
The route changes at night, and this catches people.
- Between 06:00 and 23:30 it runs between Atocha and the airport, stopping at Plaza de Cibeles and O’Donnell.
- Between 23:30 and 06:00 it starts and finishes at Plaza de Cibeles and does not serve Atocha at all.
It stops at Terminals 1, 2 and 4. Not Terminal 3.
Atocha to Terminal 1 takes about 30 minutes, with roughly five more to Terminal 2 and five more to Terminal 4. Buses come every 15 to 20 minutes by day and about every 35 overnight.
The taxi, which is a fixed price
The Ayuntamiento de Madrid sets a flat airport fare of 33 euros, in force from 1 January 2026, for any destination inside the M-30 ring road. It applies 24 hours a day all year.
The regulation is explicit that it admits no supplements of any kind. No luggage charge, no night charge, no airport charge, no terminal charge, and no metering. One price, whole car.
Outside the M-30 the flat fare does not apply. There is a 22 euro minimum for journeys under 9 km from the terminals, then metered distance rates resume at 2.55 euros plus 1.40 a kilometre on weekdays between 07:00 and 21:00, or 3.20 plus 1.60 at nights and weekends.
Note that some sources still quote 30 euros for the flat fare. The city is the tariff authority and it says 33.
Uber, Cabify, Bolt and Free Now
Madrid is materially more permissive than Barcelona here. Private hire is legal and openly operating, and Aena lists Uber, Bolt and Cabify by name with dedicated pickup infrastructure.
Free Now is different. In Madrid it dispatches licensed taxis, not private hire cars, so a Free Now booking from the airport is bound by the same 33 euro flat fare.
The pickup points are the thing to know. Private hire cannot collect you at the kerb, which is reserved for taxis and buses. You walk into a car park.
- Terminal 1, the P1 car park, west zone.
- Terminal 2, the express arrivals car park P2, module C, floor 1.
- Terminal 4, the P4 car park, module D, floor 4.
Allow 10 to 15 minutes walking from baggage reclaim, and match your car by bay number and plate rather than by GPS, which is unreliable inside the structures.
New regional rules took effect in July 2026. Anti counterfeit vehicle stickers distinguishing urban from interurban service, mandatory accessibility pictograms, and a surge cap. In an officially declared high demand situation, prices may not exceed 75 percent above a base computed from the previous ten days. During a declared regional emergency, any increase is prohibited.
Typical private hire fares run 30 to 60 euros and above at peak, from a secondary source. Note the arithmetic. With the taxi at a fixed 33 including everything, private hire is not reliably cheaper into the M-30.
The terminals are far apart
Barajas is spread out and Terminal 4 is a separate building. Getting between terminals is a bus ride, not a walk.
The free inter terminal bus is green with a T1-T2-T3-T4 destination sign and boards at Planta 0, arrivals. It runs 24 hours, every 5 to 8 minutes between 06:00 and 22:00, about every 10 minutes until 01:00 and every 20 to 40 minutes overnight. Terminal 4 to Terminal 1 takes 15 to 20 minutes.
Do not board the yellow bus, which serves long stay parking, or the blue one, which is city transport. Budget more than 30 minutes for a terminal change.
After the metro closes
Between 02:00 and 06:05 both the metro and Cercanias are shut. Three options remain.
The 203 runs all night at 5 euros, about every 35 minutes, from and to Plaza de Cibeles rather than Atocha. The taxi flat fare of 33 euros applies overnight with no night supplement. And Uber, Bolt and Cabify run from the same car park points, where surge is likeliest.
What we could not confirm
The metro journey time to Nuevos Ministerios. Metro de Madrid blocks automated access.
The Cercanias airport fare of 2.60 euros, and the first and last C-1 trains.
Whether any C-10 service runs through to Terminal 4, which would give a direct Atocha train. CRTM’s line index does not list T4 under C-10, so do not count on it.
Peak hour road journey times. No official source quantifies the delay. Only the road modes are exposed to it. The metro and Cercanias times are fixed.
Whether the 3 euro supplement survives the October 2026 flat fare change.
