Basildon’s hotel market is unusual: it is almost entirely Premier Inn and Travelodge, with four Premier Inns inside a five-mile radius of the town centre. That is good news for price, and it means the thing that actually separates them is parking.

The parking trap at East Mayne
Premier Inn Basildon East Mayne is the closest of the four to the town centre, at 0.89 miles, and it has the Beefeater attached. It is also the only one that charges to park. Premier Inn’s wording is explicit: an exclusive guest parking discount of £6.50 per 24 hours, on a Horizon Parking car park.
Over a two-night stay that is £13 you would not pay at Basildon South, Festival Park or Rayleigh. If the rooms are within about £6 a night of each other, the free-parking hotel is the cheaper stay. Worth ten seconds of arithmetic before you click book.
The one situation where East Mayne wins anyway is if you are not bringing a car at all, because it is the shortest walk and taxi hop to the centre and to Basildon station.
Basildon as a London base
This is the real argument for staying here rather than in London. c2c runs from Basildon to London Fenchurch Street in 30 to 35 minutes, with roughly six trains an hour, in the operator’s own words. Fenchurch Street puts you at Tower Hill and the City, and on the DLR and Circle and District lines from there.
Six trains an hour is the number that matters more than the journey time. It means you are never planning around a timetable, which is not true of a lot of commuter towns at this distance from London. A Basildon room plus a return fare is routinely cheaper than a central London room for the same night.
Festival Leisure Park, if you want somewhere to go in the evening
Both the Travelodge and Premier Inn Festival Park sit on Festival Leisure Park off Festival Way, which is where Basildon’s cinema, bowling and chain restaurants are. If you are travelling with children or arriving late and want food without a drive, that is the cluster to book into.
The Travelodge’s Breakfast to Go is £6.95 a head. Add that to the room before comparing against a Premier Inn where the Beefeater breakfast is priced separately, or against Basildon South where you can walk to a supermarket.
Going towards Southend
Premier Inn Basildon Rayleigh is the furthest of the four at 4.67 miles, and it markets itself as sitting between Basildon and Southend-on-Sea with access to Rayleigh station. It offers Premier Plus rooms, which are the larger ones with better beds and a coffee machine.
If the seafront is the point of the trip, Travelodge Southend on Sea at 33 Chichester Road SS1 2JP is closer to it — but check its parking arrangement, because it uses the Warrior Square pay-and-display opposite, published at £1.10 for an hour up to £12.00 for ten hours, 8am to 6pm. That is a very different proposition from free parking in Basildon.
One property to avoid online
The Chichester Hotel at Rawreth, near Wickford, appears in older Basildon accommodation lists. Its .com domain no longer resolves, and its .co.uk domain now serves an unrelated overseas gambling site. Whatever the status of the venue itself, do not follow links to it — the web address has left the hotel’s control.
