Edinburgh Castle Tickets: You Book a Date, Not a Time
Edinburgh Castle tickets are date-specific, not time-specific. Adult entry is 23.50 pounds online against 26 at the gate, and the audio guide is extra.
Almost every guide to Edinburgh Castle tells you to pick an arrival slot. The castle’s own ticket page says otherwise, in plain words: “There is no need to pre-book a timeslot; simply select a date when booking online.”
Prices
- Adult — £23.50 online, £26.00 at the gate.
- Concession £19.00 / £21.00. Child 7–15 £14.00 / £15.50.
- Family, two adults and two children — £67.50 online.
Booking is optional but you should still do it, for a different reason than the one you have been told: once the online allocation for a date sells out, no further tickets are sold at the castle. The date fills, not the hour.
One caveat we will not paper over
Historic Environment Scotland’s general visitor FAQ still describes a timed ticketing system across its sites. The castle’s own page contradicts it. The castle page is the more specific and more recent source and that is what we are reporting — but the two official pages genuinely disagree, and we would rather tell you that than pretend it is settled.
The audio guide is not included
£4.00 extra. Frequently reported as bundled; it is not. The ticket itself covers the Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, St Margaret’s Chapel, the Great Hall, the Prisons of War and the National War Museum.
Historic Scotland members and Explorer Pass holders get in free, but the tickets page tells them to book online anyway to guarantee entry. Free is not the same as guaranteed.
Timing and terrain
Last entry is an hour before closing — 17:00 in summer, 16:00 in winter. The One O’Clock Gun fires daily except Sundays, Good Friday and Christmas Day. The approach is heavily cobbled and steep, up to fifteen degrees at Foog’s Gate, and the exit route runs down seventy stone steps. A free mobility vehicle to Crown Square can be requested, though it stops running between 12:15 and 13:15 for the gun.
