Check the licence before you check the reviews. In New York City every chauffeured car must be booked through a TLC-licensed base, driven by a TLC-licensed driver, in a TLC-licensed vehicle. All three are publicly checkable, and a company that will not give you its base licence number has told you something.

How to verify a company yourself, in about five minutes

• Ask for the company’s TLC base licence number and look it up in the city’s CURRENT BASES dataset on NYC Open Data.
• Ask for the assigned driver’s TLC licence number and check it against the FHV Active Drivers list. Both datasets are refreshed daily.
• On the day, check the plate. The TLC tells passengers that for-hire plates typically begin with T and end with C, with T&LC embossed at the bottom. The driver’s TLC licence must be on display and the name must match your booking.
• Insurance is verified by the TLC at licensing rather than published per company, so a current base licence is the check available to you. Minimums are $100,000 per person for black car and livery, and $500,000 per person for luxury limousine.

What it costs, from companies that publish rates

Most NYC operators quote on request. These three publish hourly rates on their own sites, which makes them useful as a reference point rather than as recommendations:

• NYC Limousine: luxury sedan $70 an hour, SUV $80, six-passenger limo $95, two-hour minimum, before tax and gratuity.
• New York City Limo: sedan $75 to $150 an hour, stretch limo $150 to $300, two-hour minimum rising to three at weekends, gratuity 18 to 20% on top.
• M&V Limousines: business class sedan $94.26 an hour with a three-hour weekday minimum, four at weekends.

The pattern that matters for a wedding is the minimum, not the hourly rate. A three or four hour minimum at weekend rates is the real floor, and gratuity of 18 to 20% is charged on top by every operator above.

A correction to this guide

This page used to list four companies as the best wedding chauffeur firms in New York, with nothing behind the recommendation. We have removed the list. Here is what we could and could not confirm when we checked:

• NYC Crown Limo: we could not verify this company. Its listed domain does not resolve, and third-party directories disagree with each other on both its address and its phone number. We are not recommending it.
• Top Class Limousine: trading, and advertises wedding transport, but it is based at 760 Sawmill River Road in Yonkers, not New York City. Worth knowing if you assumed a city operator.
• Diamond Limousine NY and New York Trolley Company: both have live sites advertising NYC wedding transport. Neither displays a TLC licence number, so run the check above yourself.

We did not confirm a current TLC base licence for any of them. That is the check to make, and it is yours to make, not ours to assert.

Booking timing

Book early for a peak-season date and confirm the vehicle class in writing. Get the quote as a total including minimum hours, gratuity, tolls and parking rather than as an hourly figure, because every operator above adds at least two of those separately.
