Blue Lagoon Tickets: A Volcanic Closure Does Not Entitle You to a Refund
The Blue Lagoon’s terms say force majeure closures carry no compensation or refund. It is open as of August 2026, with eruption risk ongoing.

The Blue Lagoon has evacuated or closed nine or ten times since November 2023 because of eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula. Before you book, read what the terms actually say about that.
The refund position, quoted
The published force majeure clause covers “weather, strikes, natural disasters, or any other irregularity outside the company’s control”, and then states: “In such an event, no compensation or refund is payable.”
In practice the Blue Lagoon has refunded and rebooked guests through every closure since 2023. But that is goodwill, not policy. The thing that actually protects you is travel insurance, and it is worth having for this booking specifically.
Ordinary cancellation is generous by comparison: full refund with more than 24 hours’ notice on a day visit, 48 hours for the Retreat Spa.
Status as we write
Open. No closure alert on the operator’s site, normal seasonal hours posted, booking live. The Icelandic Met Office reported on 18 August 2026 that magma continues to accumulate steadily beneath Svartsengi with no eruption active; the last one ended on 5 August 2025.
The risk is real and ongoing, and the most likely forecast is continued accumulation toward a future intrusion. That is a forecast, not a closure. Check the day before you travel.
