Entry to St Peter’s Basilica is free. If you are being sold a skip-the-line basilica ticket, understand what you are buying: there is no ticketed queue to skip. The only line is Italian State Police security screening on the right side of St Peter’s Square, and everyone goes through it regardless of what they paid.
Booking is not required. It is recommended in the sense that a paid reservation adds a digital audio guide and a guaranteed slot, which shortens the wait. That is a convenience purchase, not an entry requirement.
The dome is a separate ticket
This is the part that catches people. The cupola is paid and booked separately, and it includes basilica access plus the audio guide and both the inner and outer rings.
- 551 steps on foot, or 320 remaining if you take the lift for the first stretch.
- Summer, 29 March to 25 October: 7am to 6pm. Winter, 26 October to 28 March: 7.30am to 5pm.
- Your basilica entry is scheduled around 90 minutes before your dome slot, not at the same time. Plan the morning around that gap rather than being surprised by it.
- Tickets can be bought on site, subject to availability.
We are not quoting a dome price here. The figures circulating online disagree with each other and the official checkout is the only reliable source, so check it there rather than trusting a number in a blog post, including ours.
When not to go
Wednesday mornings, because of the papal audience, and Sunday around noon. Those are the two busiest windows and they are what actually creates the long waits people blame on ticketing.
The basilica opens daily 7am to 8pm from 1 June. Dress code is enforced: long trousers for men, skirts below the knee or trousers for women, shoulders covered for everyone.
