Faro Airport to Albufeira, Lagos and the Algarve: What Each Option Costs

A pre-booked transfer from Faro airport to Albufeira costs about 32 euros for the car. A metered taxi to the same place costs about 41. That inversion is why the Algarve transfer market is the size it is, and it is the most useful thing on this page. This page sets out what every option costs, checked in September 2026.

One caveat we are going to put at the top rather than bury. Most of the official sites here, including the airport’s, the bus operator’s and the railway’s, are built in a way that would not load for us. Almost every fare below therefore comes from a secondary source and is labelled as such. Where two sources disagree we give both rather than pick.

What each option costs

Taxi totals exclude A22 tolls, which the passenger pays separately. The transfer prices are per vehicle for up to four people, so for a family they are not close.

Two things guides get wrong right now

The new taxi tariff is not in force yet. Portugal published Regulation 717 of 2026 on 9 June, which cuts the flag drop and abolishes the luggage supplement. It was contested by the taxi associations and deferred. Reporting from mid June says it will be rectified before entering into force, with implementation delayed 60 days. One outlet refers to 1 October 2026. A Faro guide updated on 20 August 2026 still quotes the 1.60 euro luggage charge as live.

So the old tariff applies today, including the luggage supplement. The 1 October date is reported rather than confirmed.

The new ride hailing law did not legalise Uber. Uber and Bolt have been legal in Portugal since 2018. Lei 59 of 2026, in force from 1 September 2026, revises that regime. The change that matters to you is that the cap limiting surge pricing to double the base fare has been removed. Taxis can now also work through the apps, and drivers must carry tamper proof identification stickers.

The airport bus

Proximo route 16 still runs. The important structural point is that the airport is in the middle of the route, not at the end. It runs between Faro city and Praia de Faro, the beach, so boarding in the wrong direction takes you to the sand rather than the town.

The fare is either 2.25 or 2.80 euros depending on which source you read, and the more recently updated one says 2.80. Cash and card are both accepted on board. The run into Faro takes 15 to 20 minutes over 6 km.

First bus from the airport is around 05:20 and the last around 00:10. Frequency is given as every 30 to 60 minutes by one source and every 15 minutes on weekday daytimes by another. There are two airport stops, one on the departures level and one on arrivals.

Route 14 also serves the airport at the same fare, but with only four buses on a weekday and two at weekends. Almost no guide mentions it.

The city terminus is the bus station on Avenida da Republica.

Trains, and the stations that are not where you think

The airport has no station. The nearest is Faro city station, 6 km away, reached by the route 16 bus, a taxi at 11 to 16 euros, or a transfer at about 20 euros for up to four.

So rail to a resort is always a two leg journey with a transfer cost before you buy a ticket.

The current Algarve regional timetable has been in force since 19 July 2026. Fares and times from Faro, from a secondary source rather than the railway itself.

Now the trap. The Algarve line runs about 140 km with 30 stations, and some popular resorts sit more than 5 km from their nearest station. The station name itself warns you in one case: it is Albufeira-Ferreiras, and it is in Ferreiras, not Albufeira. Vilamoura has no station at all.

We could not source the individual station to resort distances, so we are not going to print them. Check yours before you commit to the train.

Long distance coaches

One structural thing most guides miss. Eva Transportes no longer markets its own interurban routes under its own name. It now operates through Rede Expressos for express services and Vamus Algarve for interurban routes. Eva and Vamus are not competitors. Vamus is the brand the Eva regional network runs under.

Vamus single fares run about 3 to 7 euros by distance, with a tourist pass quoted at 35 euros for three days and 45 for seven. Those figures come from a third party and the only Vamus fare document we could find is dated January 2023, so do not rely on them.

Whether any long distance coach leaves the airport directly is contested. Two sources say onward coach travel starts from Faro city centre. A third describes an Aerobus route 56 running from the airport with seven departures a day. We could not confirm the Aerobus exists, and the balance of evidence is against it. Plan on going into Faro first.

Taxis

The rank is outside the arrivals hall, 24 hours. Cars are black with a green roof.

An eight seat car is 1.21 a kilometre by day and 1.45 at night.

One conflict. A guide updated in August 2026 gives 1.02 a kilometre by day and 1.22 at night, against the 0.94 and 1.13 above. Both agree on the 3.25 flag drop and the 1.60 luggage charge.

When the new regulation does take effect, the reported shape is a 2 euro flag drop, 73 cents a kilometre and 34 cents a minute, with the luggage and pet supplements abolished and the 2026 increase capped at 9 percent. Note that adding a per minute element means a taxi stuck in August traffic on the EN125 could cost more than it does today, not less. Those figures come from a single secondary source.

Uber and Bolt

A ride to Faro city runs about 7 euros, rising at peak. Now that the surge cap has gone, the ceiling is higher than it was.

The pickup point is reported as the Kiss and Fly drop off area near the bus stop. That is single sourced. Neither the airport’s own pages nor the taxi pages mention Uber or Bolt at all, so follow the pin in the app.

Two practical limits. There is a documented driver shortage at Faro in peak season, so waits can be long. And coverage thins toward the eastern Algarve, with Faro, Albufeira and Lagos served but Tavira limited.

We found no fare figures to any resort other than Faro city, and no airport surcharge figure.

Private transfers, and why they undercut taxis

Priced per vehicle, not per person.

Compare those with the taxi column at the top. To Albufeira the transfer is 32 against a metered 41. To Lagos it is 65 against 87. That is the whole story of this airport’s ground transport, and it is why the transfer market here is unusually large.

Shared shuttles exist and are priced per passenger with a wait at the airport while the vehicle fills, but no operator published a fare we could verify.

Renting a car, and the toll that catches everyone

The rental setup is two tier. The major brands have desks in arrivals with parking alongside. The local operators, including Guerin, Auto Jardim, Airauto and Luzcar, share the P4 car park about 250 metres from the terminal exit on the left, and are typically cheaper. Standard damage waivers here commonly carry a 1,500 euro excess that excludes tyres, windscreen and windows.

Now the A22, the Via do Infante. It is electronic only. There are no toll booths, because it was not built as a toll road. Gantries read your plate and there is nowhere to stop and pay.

If you are driving a foreign plated car you must subscribe by 23:59 on the day you first use an electronic toll, or you face a fine. That deadline is the trap, because it passes before most people realise a toll happened.

Paying manually at a Payshop or post office means waiting at least 48 hours after travel and paying within five days. Unpaid tolls follow you home, because the police issue the fine to the address on the rental agreement and the rental company adds its own admin fee.

One rental company’s own transponder terms, as an example rather than an industry standard: 20 euros cash for a car including 15 euros of pre loaded passages, with the deposit refunded only if you never used the A22 and unused credit not refunded.

The actual toll amounts we could not settle. One source gives Lagos to Faro at 2.70 euros as of January 2024, another gives sections at 0.50 to 2.50 and the full length at 7 to 8, and the taxi pages quote airport to resort exposure of 0.35 to 5.20. No current official tariff table was obtainable, so treat every A22 euro figure as unconfirmed.

The toll free alternative is the EN125, which parallels the A22 the length of the coast. Two lanes, through the towns, slower and busier.

What we could not confirm

The route 16 fare, 2.25 or 2.80.

Whether the new taxi regulation actually commences on 1 October 2026.

Whether the Aerobus from the airport exists at all.

The current A22 toll tariff from an official source.

Railway fares against the operator rather than a third party guide, and the distance from each station to the resort it is named after.

The Uber and Bolt pickup point, currently single sourced.

Road journey times to any resort. The distances are published, the durations are not, and we are not going to estimate them from mileage.

Shared shuttle fares, and any airport rental surcharge.
