Jerónimos Monastery Tickets: The Church Is Free
The church at Jerónimos, with Vasco da Gama’s tomb, is free and has its own entrance. The 18 euro ticket buys the cloister only.
Hundreds of people a day stand in the long queue at Jerónimos, pay €18, and then discover the part they came to see was free and through a different door.
Two entrances, two experiences
- The church — free. Its own entrance, its own much shorter queue. This is where Vasco da Gama’s tomb is, and Luís de Camões’s opposite it. The vaulting over the nave, the thing people photograph, is in here.
- The cloister — €18. That is what the paid ticket and the long queue are for. Two storeys of carved Manueline stonework around a courtyard.
The cloister is genuinely one of the finest in Europe and we are not telling you to skip it. We are telling you that if your time or budget is tight, the free half is the half with the famous tombs in it, and you should at minimum do that one first so you are not deciding under queue pressure.
Practical
Book the cloister slot online and you skip the ticket queue, not the entry queue. Go early — the Belém coach traffic starts around 10am and the site never recovers. Dress modestly for the church; it is an active place of worship and services take priority.
The famous pastéis de nata shop is a two-minute walk east and has its own queue, which is a separate problem.
