Mount Vesuvius Tickets: An Orange Weather Alert Closes It Automatically
The Vesuvius crater path is 11.68 euros, pre-purchase only through one authorised platform, and closes automatically on an orange weather alert.
You cannot turn up at Vesuvius and pay at the gate, and the mountain can be closed on a day that looks perfectly fine from the car park.
Pre-purchase only, one platform
Access to Trail 5, the Gran Cono, is exclusively by advance purchase through the park’s one authorised seller. A 20% last-minute allocation can be bought over the WiFi at the entrance gate, but that is a fallback, not a plan.
Adult €11.68, reduced €9.55, free for under-6s, certified 100% disabled visitors and accredited guides. The park quotes that as the all-in figure and does not break out a booking fee, so ignore anyone presenting it as “€10 plus extras”.
The weather rule is automatic
Ticketing and the trail close automatically from an orange alert upwards, issued by Campania’s regional civil protection authority. It is not a judgement call made by staff on the morning, and it is not negotiable at the barrier. Check the alert level, not the sky.
Trail 5 also closed entirely after landslides in June 2026 and only partially reopened in July. The park posts closures on its news feed; look before you travel.
Slots and caps
- Daily caps run from 2,160 in winter to 3,240 in July and August, with a maximum of 60 people every ten minutes.
- The slot is generous: you can enter from 40 minutes before to 100 minutes after your time. Last-minute tickets are much tighter.
- Last admission ranges from 15:00 in winter to 18:00 in high summer, and the visit must end within an hour of it.
The walk is about 4 km return to 1,175 metres, roughly two and a half hours, on loose ash and lapilli. Guided accompaniment above 1,000 metres is mandatory and comes with the ticket. It is graded easy, but the surface means it is not wheelchair accessible and the park publishes no accessible alternative.
