Munich Residenz Tickets: The Theatre Only Opens at 2pm

The 20 euro Residenz combination ticket is only worth it if you catch the Cuvilliés Theatre, which mostly opens from 14:00 Monday to Saturday.

The Residenz sells three things separately and two ways of combining them. The combination is only good value if you can actually get into the third one, and its opening hours are the trap.

The tickets

  • Residence Museum — €10
  • Treasury — €10
  • Cuvilliés Theatre — €5
  • Museum + Treasury — €15
  • All three — €20

No booking fee, no timed slots, and the audio guide is included free in nine languages for the Museum and Treasury — not a paid extra, as several guides claim.

The theatre’s hours

The Cuvilliés Theatre is a working rococo opera house, so rehearsals have the mornings. It generally opens only from 14:00, Monday to Saturday, with full days on Sundays and holidays. The exception is 1 August to 14 September, when it runs 09:00–18:00 daily. Buy the €20 ticket in the morning outside that window and you have paid €5 for something you cannot enter yet.

Give it more time than you planned

The Residence Museum alone runs to around 130 rooms. The official guidance for a barrier-free visit is two to three hours, and that is not padding. The Antiquarium — the long barrel-vaulted hall — is on the step-free ground floor along with the Ancestral Gallery. The Treasury and the Nibelungen Halls are not barrier-free, and there is currently no accessible toilet because of building work.

Open 09:00–18:00 from late March to mid-October, 10:00–17:00 in winter, last entry an hour before. The Court Garden outside is free, and its fountain machinery runs 10:00–14:00 from April to October.
