National Archaeological Museum Athens Tickets: Tuesday Opens at 1pm
Athens’ National Archaeological Museum opens at 13:00 on Tuesdays, not in the morning, and closes at 15:30 all winter. Admission is 20 euros.
Greece’s greatest museum has an opening pattern designed to strand people, and it does, every week.
The Tuesday trap
On Tuesdays the museum opens at 13:00. Not 08:00, not 08:30 — one in the afternoon, running to 20:00. Every other day it opens in the morning. Visitors arrive on a Tuesday at nine and find a locked door.
The second half of the problem is winter. From mid-November to early May the museum closes at 15:30 Wednesday to Monday, with last admission half an hour before. An afternoon plan simply does not work between November and spring — except on Tuesday, which is the one day it does.
Price
€20 adult, €10 reduced, year-round. It was €12 before April 2025 — the price nearly doubled, and the old blanket winter half-price for all visitors has been withdrawn. The reduced rate now applies to EU and Greek citizens aged 65 and over, in the low season only; the museum’s own page and the ministry’s summary differ by a month on when that window opens, so treat the exact start date as unsettled.
No timed entry is required. Buying online gives you priority access, nothing more. The museum was never part of the old Athens combined ticket and is not covered by anything now.
Free days
6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September, 28 October, and the first and third Sunday of each month from 1 November to 31 March. Closed 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Orthodox Easter Sunday and 25–26 December.
