Camera Obscura Tickets: 98 Steps and No Lift
Camera Obscura is six storeys with no lift, so it is not the easy family option it looks like. Adult entry is 24.95 pounds, or 21.85 until 1 September 2026.
Camera Obscura reads like the safe family choice on the Royal Mile. It is six storeys, roughly 98 steps, and there is no lift — the Outlook Tower is listed and one cannot be installed. Wheelchairs can be left in the foyer but cannot be taken round the building.
Prices
- Adult — £24.95, or £21.85 for visits between 25 June and 1 September 2026 under the temporary VAT relief on family attractions.
- Student and 65+ £21.95 / £19.20. Child 5–15 £17.95 / £15.70. Under-5s free.
There is no online-versus-door difference on standard entry. Two discounts are online only: Early Bird, £4 off the 08:00–08:45 slots in peak holidays, and Night Owl, £4 off after 19:00 through most of August. Neither stacks with the summer VAT price.
Your ticket lasts all day
Ask for a hand stamp at the desk and you can leave and come back the same day. Useful, because the building is intense and 98 steps in one go with children is a lot. Allow about an hour and three quarters in total.
The camera obscura show does not need sunshine
People skip it in bad weather assuming the live demonstration will not run. In poor light or after dark they substitute projection shows instead, so a grey Edinburgh afternoon does not waste the ticket. The show, all five floors of illusions, the Vortex Tunnel, the Mirror Maze and the rooftop terrace are all included.
Timed slots are used and busy days sell out, so book if your dates are fixed. Walking up works when there is capacity.
