St Mark’s Campanile Tickets: 15 Euros and a Lift, Not Stairs

The bell tower on Piazza San Marco is €15 and, unusually for an Italian tower, it has a lift. No 300-step spiral, no one-way traffic system, no fitness caveat. That makes it the easiest high view in Venice and the one worth booking if anyone in your group would struggle with stairs.

Book a slot or stand in the piazza

The Campanile sells timed entry online and also admits walk-ups. The difference is the queue: the walk-up line forms in the open on the piazza with no shade, and in July and August it is the longest visible queue in Venice. A booked slot skips it. The ticket is separate from the basilica — buying the €10 basilica ticket does not include the tower, and vice versa.

What you actually see

The viewing chamber is enclosed and arched, so you look out through openings rather than over a rail. The classic frame is the one everyone photographs: red roofs, the lagoon, San Giorgio Maggiore straight across the water. What you cannot see from up here is the basilica’s own facade — you are standing beside it. For that you want the Loggia, which is part of the basilica museum ticket.

Timing

• The bells ring on the hour and they are very loud at the top. Some visitors deliberately book for it; most would rather not be up there at the strike.
• Late afternoon gives you the lagoon lit from the side. Midday flattens everything.
• The tower closes in high wind. It is not common, but it happens, and a booked slot in bad weather is a refund conversation, not a guarantee.
