Peggy Guggenheim Collection Tickets: 17 Euros, Closed Tuesdays

Venice’s modern art museum sits in an unfinished palazzo on the Grand Canal, and it is €17 to get in. The single most useful thing to know before you plan a day around it: it is closed every Tuesday. Not a half-day, not seasonal — closed.

Why the Tuesday closure catches people

Most Italian state museums close on Mondays, so visitors build their Venice itinerary around a Monday gap and assume everything else is open the rest of the week. The Guggenheim is a private foundation and does not follow the state calendar. If you have a Monday and a Tuesday in Venice, the Guggenheim goes on the Monday.

What the ticket covers

• The permanent collection — Pollock, Picasso, Ernst, Magritte, Calder, hung in the rooms Peggy Guggenheim actually lived in.
• The sculpture garden, which is where her dogs and Peggy herself are buried.
• Whatever temporary exhibition is running — included, not a surcharge.
• The canal terrace with Marino Marini’s horse and rider, the most photographed object in the building.

Practical notes

It is a converted house, so the rooms are small and it feels crowded quickly — late afternoon is quieter than late morning. Large bags go in the cloakroom. The nearest vaporetto stop is Accademia, a five-minute walk; the Salute stop is a similar distance the other way and a prettier approach along the water.
