People arrive at Halászbástya expecting to pay to walk on it. Almost all of it is free. Only the upper lookout level is ticketed — the lower terraces, the arcades, the frontage onto Szentháromság tér and the Matthias Church square carry no admission.
What the upper level costs
- 1,700 Ft full, 850 Ft reduced.
- Reduced tickets are sold only in person at the box office, after proof.
- Free with a zero-forint ticket: under-6s, disabled visitors and a companion, District I card holders.
The charging windows in 2026
- 2 January – 31 May: 09:00–19:00
- 1 June – 30 September: 09:00–21:00
- 1 October – 23 December: 09:00–19:00
Free days in 2026: 1 January, 15 March, 20 August, 23 October, and 24–31 December.
Two honest caveats. The operator’s pages define when charging applies but never state in so many words that the upper level is open and free outside those hours — the implication is clear, we just cannot quote it. And its two official pages disagree on the minimum group size that earns a guide free entry, five on one, six on the other.
The winter rule changed
Guides saying the Bastion is free from mid-October to mid-March are out of date. The paid period now runs 2 January to 23 December. Six free dates, and that is all.
