Montserrat Tickets: The Black Madonna Shuts at 10.30am

The Throne of the Virgin — La Moreneta, the Black Madonna — closes between 10.30am and midday. That is precisely when the standard mid-morning R5 from Plaça Espanya delivers everybody. Go up on an early train, or accept the wait.

It is open 8am to 10.30am, then noon to 6.25pm. The basilica itself runs 7am to 8pm.

Is the basilica free? It depends who you are

Since 2023 the sanctuary needs a tourist entry ticket — but with wide exemptions. Free for EU residents, residents of Spain and Catalonia, anyone attending a service, and guests staying at Montserrat.

So a guide that says flatly “the basilica is free” is wrong for most non-European readers. The tourist ticket price is not published anywhere we could reach outside the booking widget, so check it direct rather than trusting a figure elsewhere.

Cable car or rack railway — different stations

Both start on the R5, but you get off at different stops, so decide before you board.

The combined tickets

TransMontserrat, from €50, covers Barcelona metro, the train, your choice of cable car or rack railway, the funiculars, the audiovisual space, and — the real value — direct access to the Throne of the Virgin without prior booking. TotMontserrat, from €71.50, adds the museum and a buffet lunch.

If you are an EU resident already exempt from the entry fee, read those as transport-and-queue purchases rather than admission ones.

One warning: the Santa Cova funicular is out of service for maintenance until further notice, though it still appears in some combined-ticket descriptions.
