Quinta da Regaleira Tickets: Do the Initiation Well Downwards
The Initiation Well is included in the 20 euro Quinta da Regaleira ticket, but it is one-way downwards. Head for the upper entrance first.
The spiral well at Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra is the most photographed thing in Portugal that is not a tram. Two things people get wrong about it: they think it needs its own ticket, and they arrive at the wrong end of it.
The well is included
Adult admission is €20 and the Initiation Well is part of it. There is no separate well ticket, no premium add-on, and anyone selling one is selling you air.
But it only runs one way — downwards
The well is walked from the top down, exiting through the tunnels at the bottom. You cannot climb up it against the flow. That means the classic photograph — looking down the spiral from the rim — is only available if you go to the well’s upper entrance first, before the rest of the garden. Visitors who work uphill from the house arrive at the bottom, and by then the shot is behind them.
Plan the route backwards: well first, everything else after.
Two more things worth knowing
- There is a one-hour grace period on the timed slot. Sintra’s buses are unreliable enough that this matters.
- Quinta da Regaleira is not on the Lisboa Card. It is privately run, unlike Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle up the hill.
The grounds are steep, unpaved in places and much bigger than the photographs suggest. Two hours minimum, in shoes you can climb in.
